Women Who Rock: Brody Dalle and L7

I can’t stop listening to the Spinnerette album. I love every song and its just completely golden. Even though Brody is just now reaching her 30’s she been in the music game for a long time. Starting at only 14 years old she played in her first band called Sourpuss.

At a Summersault Festival in Australia she met Rancid front man Tim Armstrong. And at the age of only 18 ballsy Brody married Tim (he was 12 years her senior) and moved from Australia to Los Angeles and that is where she founded the great The Distillers .

She is now married to Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Hommes and they have a beautiful daughter Camille.

She is great songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, has a band and a family..shit..this fine rock star has it all!

L7

The first time I heard L7 was when the band was on stage at Lollapalooza in 1994. After seeing them I quickly bought the albums Hungry for Stink and Bricks are Heavy.

I love them not only for their music but their beliefs. The band formed Rock for Choice, a pro choice women’s group which was supported also by bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine.

One of my favourite scenes in the movie Natural Born Killers is when L7’s song Shitlist comes on when Mallorey is beating the shit out of this guy while singing parts of that song…you know right before Mikey and her kill every one except one at the diner (hello…anyone?)

The band gained notoriety during a performance at the Reading Festival in 1992 when Donita removed onstage her used tampon and through it into the crowd yelling “eat my tampon you fuckers!” when mud was being thrown on stage. That’s not even the gross part..its that someone picked it up and threw it back at her!!!

Donita is currently pursuing a solo career along with L7’s drummer Dee Plakas in a band called Donita Sparks and the Stellar Moments.

Jennifer Finch was playing in a punk rock band called The Shocker but had to stop due to being diagnosed with a muscle-wasting disease. She is currently an internet marketer and website developer in Los Angeles.

Not sure what Suzi Gardner is doing these days but I do know Suzi became the first women to have her breasts plaster cast by the legendary Cynthia Plaster Caster. Check out the video footage below.
